A campaign to put the cross in the dumpster concludes in a Senate ballroom

Above: Faith no more: In response to Rev. Moon's teachings on the cross, pastor John Kingara of Worcester, MA puts the symbol of Christianity out with the trash during the 2003 "cross for a crown" roadshow. Preachers were given gold watches manufactured by Moon's jewelry firm (Source: Moon's Family Federation Web site before being scrubbed in July 2004 by cult members)

Few accounts of the Mar. 23 event have explained that it was the culmination of a Moon roadshow that would strike most Christian voters as an open expression of blasphemy. How blasphemous? We're talking "The Omen IV." The slogan: "Tear Down the Cross/Who is Rev. Moon?" Moon's pastors called for preachers in as many as 300 American churches to strip walls of the cross, replacing it with the symbol of a crown. Congressmen gave Moon a crown Mar. 23. Get it?

On Moon's Web site, Kingara (pictured above) says:

The fact that the Cross is a symbol of division, shame, suffering and bloodshed prove that it is not of God but Satan. On this 18th day of April 2003, we are beginning a new history. Pastors, please, help me to bring the cross down, because it is not of God but the devil."

Here's one of many articles on the subject, from the Unification [Church] News. It's headlined, "Tear down the cross ceremony." It talks about transitioning "from The Cross To The Crown." You couldn't really spell it out any more explicitly short of renting a blimp to carry a fluttering "Moon wants you to dump Jesus and crown Moon king instead" banner.

Here are some ministers involved with Moon's movement. Also be sure to read the Kwak Memo.

...Now the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Tony Norman has written a strong condemnation.

"John Gorenfeld: The first man on the Moon"
-- Ana Marie Cox ("Wonkette," Time.com Washington editor)

"Thanks to the superb reporting of John Gorenfeld on Salon.com and his indispensable Web page, Moon's shenanigans are routinely scrutinized. Maybe some of Gorenfeld's discernment will rub off on preachers and politicians."
-- Tony Norman, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette columnist

"The scene summoned the moment in Robert Graves's "I, Claudius" when Emperor Caligula declares himself a god in the Roman Senate; a fawning solon instantly offers a prayer."
-- New York Times editorial on the Crown of Peace scandal

"I am happy that our work is being challenged and improved in consistency, openness and coordination, by the accountability your spotlight demands. I am not talking about simply removing stuff from websites..."
-- Moon spokesman the Rev. Phil Schanker

"Instead of welcoming Reverend Moon, this government put me into prison. History will reveal the truth in the future and the American government and people will realize what an evil thing they did. What will they do then? They will bow down. Again, that is the way of natural subjugation." -- Moon in 1987

"A political movement basing its appeal on old fashioned patriotism and family values simply cannot justify an alliance with a cult that preys on the disintegration of the American family and advocates allegiance to an international social order operating with cell-like secrecy."
-- Rep. Jim Leach (R-IA)
